Janitor AI sits in a different category from most products on this page. It started as a community-driven character library where the platform itself didn't run the LLM (you brought your own, via an OpenAI proxy or one of the open-weight backends). That's still part of the product, but Janitor has since added its own in-house model (JLLM) and a Pro subscription on top, so the picture is more complicated than it used to be.
If you've ended up here looking for a Janitor AI alternative, you almost certainly know about either the BYOM setup pain, the JLLM queueing on the free path, or the mandatory ID verification rollout that's been the loudest community complaint of 2026. This is the long version.
What Janitor AI is, and why people use it¶
Janitor AI launched as a community-built character library with an explicit decision not to run the model in-house. The original reason: a cease-and-desist from OpenAI early on, after Janitor was using OpenAI's API as the de facto backend. Janitor pivoted to BYOM (bring your own model) via proxy. The community grew fast.
The shape today is layered. There's still the BYOM path, mostly used by power users routing to DeepSeek, Claude (with jailbreaks), or open-weight models via OpenRouter. There's JLLM, Janitor's own in-house model that runs the free path (queued and message-capped). There's a Pro subscription that unlocks unlimited messages, priority queueing, NSFW, and access to the better LLM options. And on top of all of that, in 2025 Janitor added mandatory third-party ID verification, which has been the most-complained-about change of 2026 (high failure rate, "pending" purgatory, a material chunk of the userbase locked out).
The catalogue itself is one of the most creative in the space. There are characters and scenarios you won't find anywhere else, the writing is often better than the catalogues on other platforms, and the lack of platform-level filtering means stories can go places they can't on Character.AI.
We respect what the Janitor community has built. We're not trying to replicate it.
Where Janitor AI users hit the wall¶
The BYOM path is a project¶
If you're routing to OpenAI-compatible proxies (OpenRouter, Mancer, etc.) or to open-weight backends, you're signing up for a separate account, generating an API key, pasting a proxy URL into Janitor's settings, and managing the moderation policies of whichever upstream you chose.
For technical users who already have API keys, this is a 20-minute setup. For everyone else, it's the difference between "I'll try it" and "I'll come back to this later."
Billing splits across providers if you go BYOM¶
Pay Janitor (or use it free), pay your LLM provider separately. If you use Claude via OpenRouter, you pay OpenRouter. Costs are unpredictable because they depend on model, context length, and message volume in ways that aren't easy to estimate up front. Janitor Pro consolidates this somewhat by giving you Janitor-billed access to the better models, but BYOM users still get a second invoice if they choose that path.
JLLM queues, and the better models are paywalled¶
The free in-house JLLM path is genuinely zero-setup, but it's queued and message-capped, especially at peak. The community consensus is that JLLM quality is a step below the better proxy routes (DeepSeek V4, Claude). To unlock the unlimited path and the better LLM options, you're on Pro.
Mandatory ID verification¶
In late 2025 and into 2026, Janitor rolled out third-party document-scan ID verification. The community has been documenting a high failure rate, an opaque "pending" status, and accounts locked out for weeks. This is the single biggest source of "I'm done with Janitor" posts of the year. If you're sensitive about handing your government ID to a third-party verification vendor, this alone is a reason some users have migrated.
OpenAI's policy gates pushed the community elsewhere¶
If you're using OpenAI as your backend, you're inside OpenAI's content policies, which are strict for romantic or roleplay content. Most serious roleplay users on Janitor have moved off OpenAI to DeepSeek V4, Claude via OpenRouter, or open-weight models, precisely because of policy gating. The community has largely solved this by routing around OpenAI rather than working around the policies.
The catalogue's quality varies wildly¶
Like any community-generated catalogue, quality is uneven. The good characters are exceptional, but you have to find them.
How Embraces handles each of these¶
Zero setup¶
Sign up, pick a Companion (or create one), start chatting. No API keys, no backend configuration, no separate accounts. Five minutes from landing on the homepage to your first reply.
One transparent bill, no document-scan ID gate¶
A single Messages bundle covers everything: the LLM cost, the platform, the memory storage, the image generation. There's no second invoice from an upstream provider, and we don't ask you to upload a government ID to a third-party verification vendor.
A reply counts as a Message, generated images count as more. That's the whole pricing model.
We control the model and update it transparently¶
Embraces uses frontier LLMs via OpenRouter, and we keep up with the state of the art. When a new frontier model ships, we evaluate it and we tell users in advance if we're swapping. You don't have to manage which upstream you're on.
No third-party policy gates¶
Our policies are our policies, and they're documented. You're not subject to an upstream provider deciding to tighten content rules on you mid-month.
A character editor, not a public catalogue¶
We don't have a public catalogue of community-generated bots. Instead we have a character editor where you can build your own Companion in a few minutes. The community in our Discord shares character templates, which has the side effect of being a less noisy catalogue.
Pricing, side by side¶
| Janitor AI | Embraces AI | |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | Free in-house JLLM (queued, capped) or BYOM-via-proxy | Welcome Messages on signup, then paid (one transparent bill) |
| Paid tier | Janitor Pro (unlimited JLLM + better LLM access) and/or BYOM with separate provider invoice | One Messages bundle per month |
| Setup | Zero for JLLM; API key + proxy config for BYOM | Sign in |
| Model | JLLM in-house (free path), or BYOM via proxy (DeepSeek, Claude, open-weight) | Frontier LLM via OpenRouter |
| Memory | Depends on backend; Project Multiverse adds shared canon across linked bots | Permanent, included on every plan |
| ID verification | Mandatory third-party document scan | Standard email/OAuth signup |
When Janitor AI is still the better choice¶
If you're a technical user who already has API keys, enjoys the catalogue, and wants total control over which model you're using, Janitor is genuinely the right product. The flexibility is the feature.
If you've found specific characters in Janitor's catalogue that you love, those don't transfer. (You can recreate them in our character editor, but it's not the same as importing.)
And if you're using a backend with no usage cap (e.g. a local Kobold), Janitor can be effectively free in a way we can't match.
