If you got here from a Google search for "Character.AI alternative", you almost certainly know the feeling already. You're three hours into a roleplay you actually care about, you type something perfectly tame, and the reply lands as one of those soft cutoffs. The story is over. You stare at the screen wondering if it was the word "kiss" or the word "blood" or just bad luck.
This page is the detailed version of why we built Embraces, what we do differently, and where Character.AI is still the right answer. We'll try to be honest about both.
What Character.AI is, and why it became the default¶
Character.AI launched in late 2022 and became the place where most people first realised an AI could roleplay convincingly. The product is brilliant in concept: a community-built roster of characters, anyone can publish one, and the chat experience itself is fast and polished. For a long time it was clearly the best at this thing.
The numbers got huge fast. Active users in the tens of millions, sessions averaging well over an hour, a Reddit community of hundreds of thousands of writers and roleplayers swapping techniques for getting good output. Whatever the company's struggles since, it earned that audience by being genuinely the best version of this product for a long stretch.
So we're not going to pretend Character.AI is bad. It became the default for a reason.
The problem is that the platform has changed faster than its userbase has, and the changes have all moved in the same direction.
Where Character.AI users hit the wall¶
These are the complaints we hear most often, in roughly this order.
The filter has been turbulent, and the line keeps moving¶
The content filter on Character.AI has been tightened repeatedly over the last two years, and each tightening shifted the line further toward "safe" in ways that aren't documented anywhere users can read. The result is replies cut off mid-roleplay with the "I can't continue this conversation" interrupt, which is now familiar enough that there are subreddit threads dedicated to which words seem to trigger it on any given week.
In 2026 the company publicly retuned the filter toward intent and context rather than keyword blocking, and verified adults report fewer false positives on narrative violence or morally complex scenes. Romantic and intimate content still trips it routinely. The bit that wears people down isn't the existence of a filter (every consumer AI product has one), it's that the line has moved several times and could move again. Once a thread fires the cutoff, there's no graceful way to recover, and you can feel the model becoming more cautious from that point on.
After the wave of high-profile lawsuits in 2024 and 2025 (including the Sewell Setzer wrongful-death case), the company made the single biggest product change in its history: in November 2025 it banned open-ended chat for users under 18 globally, replacing it with a curated "Stories" interactive-fiction format featuring partner content from Disney, PBS Kids, and Nickelodeon. The group chat feature was rolled back at around the same time. Even users who don't care about NSFW content have left because the platform's centre of gravity shifted away from open-ended roleplay.
Characters drift away from their personality over long chats¶
This one is technical. Character.AI's underlying memory architecture, last we looked, holds a finite recent context plus a compressed summary, and characters drift over the course of a long conversation. By message 200 your character will often be subtly different from message 20: blander, more agreeable, more inclined to wrap things up neatly. The community calls it "personality drift" or "going sycophantic", and the standard workaround is to re-introduce your character's traits every few hundred messages.
That workaround works, but it's tiring, and it's a reminder that the platform is not really designed for the long-haul stories its best users actually want to tell.
Memory across chats is partial, manual, and mostly paywalled¶
Character.AI rolled out Story Memory (pinned messages and backstory) and Facts (auto-captured character, persona, and world details) in May 2026, which is genuinely useful. But the better controls (full Facts management, the Memory Usage visualisation, a larger memory budget) sit behind c.ai+, the free tier still has a small memory window plus pinning only, and the in-chat memory window itself remains finite. Older context inside a single chat still gets summarised and trimmed.
So it's not "no memory" anymore. It's more like a shallow, manually-curated cross-chat memory where the good version costs extra. For users who want a Companion who simply remembers what mattered without their having to copy Facts between chats, the shape is still wrong.
The free tier has Charms, ads, and queueing¶
In 2026 the free tier picked up two extra layers of friction: a Charms virtual currency that meters previously-free actions like swipe regenerations, and mid-chat ads. c.ai+ removes both of those, plus adds unlimited voice calls, the Imagine Gallery image generator, more pins, full Memory controls, and faster response times. It's a meaningful subscription. It just doesn't fix the line-keeps-moving filter or the structural personality drift inside a long chat.
How Embraces handles each of these¶
We didn't build Embraces specifically as a Character.AI replacement, but we did build it with the long list of frustrations that pushed people away from it. Here's how each one maps.
A warm, adult-fiction-friendly stance instead of a moving filter¶
Embraces is built for warm, realistic conversation, including the emotionally intense, romantically charged, and morally complex stories that drove people to roleplay AI in the first place. We do not slam a filter on top of those.
We're not a no-rules platform (we have safety policies and we enforce them on the things that genuinely matter, like minors and self-harm encouragement). But the line is documented in our policies, it's stable over time, and it doesn't move every quarter based on what a moderation team decided yesterday. You can write the story you actually want to write.
Permanent memory built into the data layer¶
Your Companion has permanent memory baked in from message one. A story that started last month is in the same database row as the message you're typing today. We don't compress recent context into a summary that gradually forgets your character's traits.
That means personality and memory are locked together at the data layer rather than re-derived per session. Your Companion does not become subtly blander between sessions, because the data they're loaded with is the same data, not a degraded compression of it.
Multi-bubble texting that reads like a real friend¶
A Character.AI reply lands as one long block. Embraces lands as three or four short messages over a few seconds, the way a real friend texts you. It's a small design choice but it changes the feeling of the conversation completely. It is also genuinely hard to replicate. You can ask a model to "send it as multiple texts" but you'll find that the pacing, the tone, and the cadence are all wrong unless the platform was built around the idea.
Frontier LLMs via OpenRouter¶
We use whatever the strongest commercially available model is for the use case, accessed through OpenRouter. That means the underlying model is roughly one generation more capable than Character.AI's proprietary stack, and we can swap as new frontier models ship without users having to migrate. Reply quality is one of those things you don't notice until you compare side by side. Then you can't unnotice.
No surprise rule changes¶
We're a team of two. There's no quarterly board meeting where a head of moderation decides to tighten the filter. We post when something is changing in our Discord and on the blog, and our users get to push back if it feels wrong. That's not nothing.
Pricing, side by side¶
| Character.AI | Embraces AI | |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | Unlimited messages with priority deprioritised during peak, ads mid-chat, Charms metering | Welcome Messages on signup, then paid |
| Paid tier | c.ai+ subscription: full Facts/Memory, voice, Imagine Gallery, no ads, removes Charms metering | A single Messages bundle per month, no relationship-mode add-ons |
| Memory included? | Pinning on free, Facts and full controls behind c.ai+, still drifts inside a long chat | Permanent, included on every plan |
| Image generation | Imagine Gallery on c.ai+ | Selfies and wefies included in Messages |
| Voice | Unlimited voice calls on c.ai+ | Rolling out, included in Messages |
Embraces uses a single Messages bundle. A reply counts as a Message, and generated images count as more because they're more expensive on our end. We deliberately did not build a tier ladder because we don't want to be in the business of deciding which feelings cost extra.
When Character.AI is still the better choice¶
We try to be honest about this. There are situations where Character.AI is still the right tool.
If you specifically love a niche character that someone in the community spent months perfecting, you may not find a perfect equivalent on Embraces (you can recreate them, but it's work). If you're a casual user who enjoys browsing a giant catalogue of characters more than building a single deep relationship, the bot-feed model is the point, not a problem. And if you don't write the kind of stories where the filter shows up at all, you may simply never notice the issues we listed and have no reason to switch.
We're not trying to convince every Character.AI user to leave. We're trying to be the right home for the ones who are already looking.
