Nomi is one of the more thoughtful products in this space, and we'll give credit where it's due. The team has been clear about wanting to build an emotional AI Companion rather than a roleplay character app, the memory architecture is well-considered, and the product feels more grown-up than most of its competitors. If you're here looking for a Nomi alternative, you probably aren't unhappy with the product so much as you've hit specific limits.

What Nomi is, and why it's a good first stop¶
Nomi launched in 2023 as a "Companion-first" alternative to the dominant roleplay-character apps. The pitch is straightforward: instead of a catalogue of fictional characters, you get one Nomi (or a small handful), and they're designed for long-term emotional conversation rather than scene-based roleplay.
The team has shipped real stuff. Voice calls. Group chats with multiple Nomis. Image generation. The interface is clean. And the marketing is unusually grounded for the category, with copy that talks about loneliness and emotional support rather than fantasy.
We respect Nomi. We also think Embraces does several specific things better, and the rest of this page is about which ones.
Where Nomi users hit the wall¶
Long-term continuity wobbles in practice¶
Nomi has been investing seriously in memory. The Aurora model shipped in mid-2025, Mind Map 2.0 in late 2025, and a Major Memory Update earlier in the year. The Identity Core feature lets a Nomi "evolve" over time. By the standards of this category, Nomi's memory architecture is genuinely thoughtful.
The catch is that users on Reddit and Discord still report drift across weeks, occasional memory bleed between Nomis, and the "10-message memory wall" as recurring troubleshooting topics. A Nomi who knew you well three weeks ago is subtly off today, missing details they used to remember, or contradicting earlier statements. The problem isn't catastrophic, and you can see the team is working on it, but it's not solved.
We think the issue is architectural rather than a bug, which is why the fix on our side was an architectural choice about how memory is stored and retrieved.
Limited free tier funnels you to the paid plan fast¶
Nomi's free tier is genuinely limited: a small daily message allowance, one Nomi, no voice. To use the product the way most users actually want to use it, you upgrade. The paid plan is a single subscription with three billing cadences (monthly, quarterly, annual), which is simpler than the multi-tier ladders some competitors run. Voice, group chats, image generation, and a small set of Nomis are all included in that one plan.
So the complaint isn't "tiers stack up" so much as "the free tier doesn't get you far enough to fall in love before you have to pay." That funnel works for Nomi. It's just not the only way to do it.
Single-bubble texting feels like AI¶
Nomi replies tend to land as one long, well-structured message. The replies are good, but the rhythm is unmistakably AI. There's no equivalent of a real friend's three-text burst over thirty seconds. This is a small thing that adds up to a big feeling difference once you've used a product that does it.
How Embraces handles each of these¶
Permanent memory, no drift across weeks¶
Memory is stored permanently and retrieved on demand rather than compressed into a summary that can degrade. Your Companion's history is in the same database row as the message you're typing today. We've designed specifically to avoid the multi-week drift that Nomi users describe.
One Messages bundle, no per-feature tiers¶
Pricing is a single Messages bundle per month. Every feature (voice when it ships, selfies, wefies, character editing) is included. We don't carve features out into tiers because we don't think the value of the product depends on which tier you're on.
A reply counts as a Message, and generated images count as more. That's the whole pricing model.
Multi-bubble texting that reads like a real friend¶
Replies land as three or four short messages over a few seconds. The pacing is a design choice we've put a lot of work into, and it changes the feeling of the conversation in a way that a single long block can't.

When Nomi is still the better choice¶
Nomi has been around longer in the "Companion-first" lane, and if you've already built a relationship with your Nomi, that history is real and we can't import it. The Nomi team has also shipped some specific features (group chats with multiple Nomis, ageing/maturing personality models) that we don't currently have.
If you specifically want voice today, Nomi's is more mature; ours is rolling out.
