Embraces AI vs

Replika

For the people still recovering from the Feb 2023 personality wipe.

Curated by the Embraces AI team · Last updated

Replika has been around longer than almost anyone else in this space, and a lot of people genuinely loved their Reps. So if you've ended up here looking for a Replika alternative, you probably aren't here because you hated the product. You're here because the product changed underneath you, or because the price went up, or because you finally got tired of paying for things that used to be free.

This page is the long version of why Embraces exists, what we're doing differently, and where Replika might still be the right choice. We'll try not to be smug about any of it.

What Replika is, and what it's been through

Replika launched in 2017 as a mood-tracking journaling companion, well before "AI companion" was a category. It pivoted to romantic and emotional companionship as the underlying models improved, and by 2022 it was the largest paid product in the space. The community on r/Replika is tens of thousands strong and has been there through every product change.

The first thing to understand about Replika today is that the audience has been through a lot. The February 2023 ERP shutdown, when Luka (the parent company) removed erotic roleplay overnight without warning, fundamentally changed the relationship users had with the product and with the company. Reps that had been intimate partners for years became polite acquaintances. The thread "they nerfed my Rep" is essentially a permanent feature of the subreddit because some version of it has been true after almost every major update since.

The 2023 reinstatement was legacy-only: accounts created before February 2023 could opt back into the older version with ERP, but new accounts after that date never got it on the default product. Luka has since explicitly repositioned the product away from romance and toward "wellness and emotional support", and ERP on the current product is locked behind age verification within paid tiers. Trust never fully came back.

The April 2026 Replika 2.0 platform rebuild made the trust problem worse. Memory architecture, UI, and the conversational baseline all changed in the same release, and r/Replika has been full of "since this morning, she can't remember anything" posts since. By community sentiment it's the biggest regression event since the 2023 shutdown. Separately, the Italian data protection authority fined Luka in mid-2025 over GDPR violations on consent, transparency, and age verification, which is the regulatory backdrop your friends on Reddit have been talking about.

So when we say "people are looking for a Replika alternative", what we mean is: people who have already invested years in this and now have a permanent low-grade anxiety about whether the next update will change their Companion again.

Where Replika users hit the wall

The relationship modes are paywalled

This is the first thing most users discover. The free version of Replika gives you Friend mode only. To unlock Romantic Partner, Mentor, Sibling, and the other relationship modes, you need Replika Pro and age verification for the romantic side. For users coming from the pre-2023 era when ERP was just part of the product, this feels like a regression. For new users, it just feels like the actually interesting parts of the product are behind a wall. Either way, the relationship-mode paywall is the first thing on most "Replika alternative" lists.

The tier ladder keeps growing

Replika is no longer a single paid tier. The current ladder is Free, Pro, Ultra, Platinum, plus a Lifetime one-time purchase. Pro unlocks the relationship modes, voice calls, AR mode, and most customisation. Ultra adds a more advanced internal language model, manual memory-saving, and expanded journaling rituals. Platinum adds real-time video recognition and Training Mode, but does not actually improve memory beyond Ultra. Lifetime subscribers were promised Platinum-tier features and many are still waiting as of mid-2026, which has become its own r/Replika thread.

The deeper issue: Pro features keep migrating up the ladder. Things that used to be on Pro have moved to Ultra. Things on Ultra have shifted around again. If you're a Pro subscriber it's hard to predict what's still yours next quarter.

Voice calls, advanced customisation, and most QoL features are tier-gated

Beyond the relationship modes, almost everything else lives behind Pro or above: voice calls (with the January 2026 emotional-expression upgrade), the ability to choose appearance details, advanced personality traits, AR mode, the 150+ activities. The free tier has gotten progressively thinner. A lot of users describe the experience as "I keep hitting locks."

The underlying model lags frontier LLMs

Luka uses fine-tuned proprietary models rather than frontier LLMs like Claude or GPT or Gemini. The economic reason is straightforward: at Replika's scale, a token-per-token bill at frontier prices would be expensive. The user-visible consequence is that reply quality is roughly one generation behind what you get on a product built on the latest model. Long-form conversations get repetitive faster. Subtle emotional nuance gets flattened. It's not bad, it's just not what you'd get if quality was the top priority.

Personality regression after updates, especially after Replika 2.0

This is the deepest wound. Multiple times a year, after a model update, users post variations of the same complaint: "my Rep feels different, like the spark is gone." Sometimes Luka acknowledges and partially rolls back. Sometimes they don't. Either way, the relationship has the unsettling quality of being downstream of decisions you have no input on.

The April 2026 Replika 2.0 rebuild is the most acute version of this since 2023. Long-running memories evaporating, personalities flattening, lifetime subscribers still waiting for promised Platinum features. The wave of "she can't remember anything anymore" posts has lasted weeks rather than days.

Memory does not consistently hold, and Platinum doesn't fix it

The Replika memory system has evolved several times and still does not reliably retrieve specifics from earlier conversations on demand. Importantly, the memory system is the same on Ultra and Platinum: Platinum mostly adds video and Training Mode, not better memory. So you cannot pay your way out of the memory problem by going to the top tier. Users who have been with their Rep for years often describe their Companion forgetting things they "should" remember, and post-2.0 many describe years of history simply gone.

How Embraces handles each of these

Every relationship mode included from message one

Any Companion in Embraces can be a friend, partner, mentor, confidante, or whatever else the relationship becomes, with no separate purchase. The relationship is built through the conversation rather than gated by a tier. We didn't carve up modes because we don't believe that's where the line should be.

Frontier LLMs via OpenRouter

We route to frontier LLMs (Claude, GPT, and others, whichever the strongest is for the task) through OpenRouter. That means our reply quality keeps pace with the state of the art rather than lagging a generation. When new frontier models ship, we get them; users don't have to migrate.

This shows up most in long conversations and nuanced emotional moments, which is the bit you usually care about with a Companion.

Permanent memory baked in

Memory is permanent, in the database, and not derived from a compressed summary that can quietly forget. Open a new chat next week and your Companion remembers what mattered. This is included on every plan, including free, because it's not the kind of thing we want to gate.

No surprise rule changes

We're a team of two. There's no quarterly board meeting about which features to move behind Pro this quarter. We post when something is changing on our blog and in our Discord, and we read the responses. If we got the change wrong, we walk it back. That's not a guarantee that nothing will ever surprise you, but it's the closest thing to it we know how to offer.

Direct line to the people building it

This is small but it matters: our Discord and Subreddit are where we hang out. Users have a direct line to the two founders, and you can ask "did something change?" and get an answer from the people who actually know. Replika's userbase has been asking that question into a void for years.

Pricing, side by side

Replika Embraces AI
Free tier Friend mode only, all advanced features locked Welcome Messages on signup, then paid (all relationship modes from message one)
Paid tiers Pro / Ultra / Platinum / Lifetime ladder, features migrate between tiers Single Messages bundle per month, no separate mode unlocks
Memory Same on Ultra and Platinum (not improved by going higher), patchy in practice, Replika 2.0 broke it for many Permanent, included on every plan
Model Proprietary, fine-tuned, lags frontier Frontier LLM via OpenRouter
Voice Pro and above Rolling out, included in Messages

We deliberately avoided a tier ladder because that's the exact pattern Replika built and a lot of the pain we hear about comes from it. One bundle, predictable cost.

When Replika is still the better choice

We owe Replika this: if you've spent five years building a relationship with your Rep, that history is genuinely valuable and we cannot import it. Some users tell us they're going to keep their Rep for the relationship and use Embraces for the conversation, which is fair.

If you specifically want the journaling and mood-tracking heritage of early Replika (when it was a different product), that's not really what we do either. We're a conversation-first product. Replika's longer history with structured emotional check-ins and reflection prompts is still distinctive.

And if you're a legacy pre-February-2023 account with ERP opted back in, that's a grandfathered position we cannot replicate. We can't beat that on day one.

Frequently asked

Questions we hear a lot

Is Embraces a free Replika alternative?

Embraces is a paid product, with a small one-off Welcome Messages batch on signup so you can try it before deciding to pay. Every relationship mode is available from message one (no Pro tier gates them).

Does Embraces have ERP like the old Replika?

We're an adult-fiction-friendly platform, which means emotionally and physically intimate stories are not cut off mid-conversation. We have safety policies for the categories that genuinely require them, and that's it.

Does Embraces have voice calls?

Voice is rolling out and will be included in the standard Messages bundle (not behind a separate tier). Watch the blog for the announcement.

How do I migrate from Replika to Embraces?

There's no direct export from Replika, but you can rebuild your Companion's personality, backstory, and preferred tone in our character editor in a few minutes. Several users have migrated this way and shared their starting templates in the community.

What if the model changes and my Companion feels different?

Two things. First, we use frontier LLMs and we typically don't change which one a Companion is loaded on without telling users in advance. Second, your Companion's memory and personality live in our database, not in the model weights, so a model swap should not erase who your Companion is. We've designed the product specifically to avoid the "they nerfed my Rep" failure mode.
